Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia or Anorexia Nervosa is a very serious disease plaguing people today. The person who suffers from this disorder sees them self as being over weight and disgusting to look at. The person they see in the mirror is not the person that others see. The Anorexic person becomes obsessed even consumed by the desire to loose weight and look thin. Many emaciated people who suffer from this disease create serious medical problems themselves because of the desire to be thin. Their quest is like chasing a rainbow because as soon as they loose the weight they want to loose they still consider themselves to be fat.
Anorexic Disorder Tactics
People suffering from Anorexia or Anorexia Nervosa have many ways to rid themselves of unwanted weight. Some will diet continually, others will self induce vomiting (purging) others will use laxatives, diuretics and enemas to drop a few pounds. Many people suffering from Anorexic are actually malnourished.
The anorexic person will usually weight them self many times every day. Many people who suffer the Anorexia Disorder will try to hide their tactics that allow them to remain thin. It may be difficult to actually catch someone you suspect is struggling with Anorexia.
Signs of Anorexia Disorder
Like any disorder people may go through phases where they obsess over their weight and then go back to normal. It is not uncommon for some suffering from Anorexia to also be diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or some other obsessive behavior. Here are some symptoms to look for if you suspect someone may be struggling with Anorexia:
- Brittle nails and hair
- Dry yellowish skin
- Osteopenia and Osteoporosis
- Loss of muscle and physical weakness
- Constipation
- Low blood pressure
- Drop in body temperature (cold all of the time)
Anorexia Nervosa Help
There is help for people suffering from Anorexia. If you or a loved one is struggling with an obsessive out of control desire to loose weight medical help is available. Usually the family medical Doctor can recommend a specialist to work with. If not, contact physicians in the phone book or on the internet. Search under eating disorder specialists. The main thing is that the person suffering from the Anorexia Disorder gets some type of help. The disease/disorder is serious enough and people can actually die if left untreated. Some studies show that people with Anorexia are 10 times more likely to die than those without the disorder.
